Smash Mouth Singer Steve Harwell Dead At 56

Steve Harwell, former lead singer of Smash Mouth, died Monday at his home in Boise, Idaho, at the age of 56.
News broke over the weekend that the “All Star” singer was on his deathbed due to liver failure caused by alcohol consumption.
Harwell previously retired from the band in 2021, after video of an appearance at The Big Sip in New York showed Harwell slurring his speech and swearing at fans. According to representatives, Harwell’s behavior at the show was caused by ongoing medical issues related to heart disease.
“I’ve tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn’t able to,” Harwell said in a press release at the time of his retirement. “Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a rock star, performing in front of sold-out arenas, and have been so fortunate to live out that dream.”
Smash Mouth rose to fame in the late 90s with the hits “Walkin’ On The Sun” and “All Star,” and a cover of The Monkees’ “I’m a Believer” that appeared on the “Shrek!” soundtrack. The band’s last studio album, “Magic,” was released in 2012.
